World Environment Day, established by the UN General Assembly at its 27th session by the Resolution No. A/RES/2994 (XXVII) of December 15, 1972, is annually celebrated on June 5. The main purpose of the holiday is to draw attention to the problems of the environment and stimulate the activity on its protection.

This date was not chosen by chance. On June 5, 1972, the first UN World Conference on Problems of Human Environment began its work in Stockholm. The Stockholm Conference was the first global environmental forum to play a key role in the global environmental policy development.

Environmental problems are one of the most important problems of modern society, for the solution of which federal targeted programs in the field of environmental development are implemented in our country: Ecology National Project, Strategy of Environmental Safety of Russia Until 2025, Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Environmental Development of the Russian Federation for the Period Until 2030.

Everyone has the right to a favourable environment. Human health is determined by the state of various components of the environment: natural, social, educational, etc., which indicates the importance of medical education greening. Healthcare workers are among the first to face the negative impact on human health caused by pollution of environmental components and unsound environmental management. A sufficient level of environmental culture of students at medical universities and specialists contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between the quality of the environment and the health of the population, assessment of environmental risks under the influence of negative environmental factors, search for solutions to environmental safety problems, creation of a comfortable environment, possibility of professionally competent participation in environmental education of the population and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. The formation of environmental literacy of students by the Department of Biology, Medical Genetics and Ecology of KSMU is carried out during the study of the disciplines “Biology, Basics of Ecology”, “Genetics, Medical Ecology”, as well as through the involvement in project activity. In the 2021-2022 academic year, together with the Department of Biology of Gomel State Medical University, “Ecological Kaleidoscope” international scientific and educational project was implemented.
