International Medical Institute

The International Medical Institute officially began its work on February 13, 2020. The institute is a new division of KSMU, but it is based on many years of the university experience in the international activities and traditions established in the early 90s of the last century.

The first international students were from Syria and India. They came to study at our university in 1992. Until January 1, 1993, foreign citizens studied at the medical and pharmaceutical faculties. At that time the education was in the Russian language which of course made students’ adaptation difficult. However, the traditional warm attitude of Russians to foreign friends helped students not only to adapt quickly to life in Russia but also to study successfully and master medical knowledge.

In 1993, the international faculty was established by the decision of the Academic Council; the first Dean of the faculty was Elena Georgievna Tshaskovskaya. During this period a well-structured system of foreign students’ adaptation was developed, curricula were adjusted, fruitful and close relations were established with the authorities of the Kursk region and the city of Kursk, law enforcement agencies and the migration service. All this allowed to increase significantly the international activity of the university. Igor Anatolievitch Saraev, Alexander Viktorovitch Ivanov, Olga Vitalievna Zamyatkina, Natalia Alexanderovna Borisova, Natalia Anatolyevna Voshchinina, Larisa Vasilievna Zhirova worked as deputy Deans at the Faculty in that time.

In 1994, the international students received education in the intermediary language in the specialties “General Medicine” and “Pharmacy”, since 1998 – in the specialty “Dentistry”, since 2005 – in the specialty “Social work”.

The Administration for International Relations was formed in 2004; it was headed by Yuri Shalvovitch Iobidze. The Administration provided international cooperation of the university with foreign educational, scientific organizations and clinics, as well as the conclusion of international treaties, export of educational services, admission of international students, academic exchange of students and faculty members, interaction with foreign embassies, educational work with international students and other activities related to the presence of foreign citizens on the territory of Russia.

In 2006, Professor Yury Dmitrievich Lyashev was elected Dean of the faculty; under his guidance the faculty grew into the leading one in the country, both in terms of the number of students and the level of education. For many years the vice-deans were the associate professors: Galina Nikolaevna Goriainova, Elena Vladislavovna Antopolskaya, Dmitry Viktorovich Polyakov, Tatyana Aleksandrovna Samgina, Sergei Nikolaevich Radionov.

A great contribution to the development of the faculty was made by the employees who worked in the Dean’s office at different times. These are professors: Irina Grigorievna Khmelevskaya, Mikhail Yuryevich Smakhtin, Nikolai Alexandrovich Konoplya, associate professors: Julia Vladimirovna Luneva, Natalia Sergeevna Razinkova, Andrei Evgenievich Antonov.

It is difficult to overestimate merit of Mohamad Toufic Chahine who made tangible contribution to the establishment and development of the KSMU international faculty. Today Mohamad Toufic Chahine holds the position of Director of the International Medical Institute. In 2017 Mohamad Toufic Chahine became the Honorary Consul of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Kursk.

Today, the International Medical Institute performs successful international and educational activities. The division ensures the participation of Kursk State Medical University in international cooperation in the field of secondary vocational and higher education.

The International Medical Institute organizes and supervises:

  • participation in the international programs of improvement of secondary vocational and higher education;
  • participation in the programs of academic mobility of students, teachers and researchers;
  • interaction with embassies of foreign states in Russia;
  • analysis and synthesis of information on the processes occurring among the international students;
  • organization of the admission of foreign citizens to study at KSMU;
  • educational work with the international students and their introduction to a healthy lifestyle;
  • assistance to the international students in resolving social issues;
  • familiarization of the international students with local acts of KSMU;
  • familiarization of the international students with their legal status, the rules of residence in Russia, sanitary and other rules for foreign citizens, the rules of movement on the territory of Russia and the monitoring of the implementation of these rules;
  • execution of documents for registration, deregistration, extension of the validity of visas of the international students in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Kursk region;
  • issuing invitations to foreign citizens;
  • execution of the contracts on the provision of educational services with the international students, etc.
