On February 7, under the patronage of the Russian Union of Rectors, KSMU hosted an open popular science lecture by the head of the Urology Department, Professor Oleg Ivanovich Bratchikov “Actual problems of modern urology – from facts to practical actions”, dedicated to the Day of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia.
Oleg Ivanovich reported in his speech on three main problems in urology: issues of male development, problems of urolithiasis and innovations in the treatment of bladder cancer.
The lack of an effective assistance system to the male population (insufficient number of male consultations, no training of andrologists, the issue of the treatment of metabolic syndrome has not been fully resolved) has led to a reduction in men’s life expectancy and an increase in infertility. Nowadays people have developed a new technique to overcome male infertility by taking sperm for IVF directly from the testicle.
The number of patients with urolithiasis energetically grows (30-40% per year). The equipping of urological hospitals with modern equipment and the development of high-tech laparoscopic and endoscopic operations using various types of energy (laser and focused ultrasound) has almost been completed.
The main problem of bladder cancer treatment is postoperative tumor relapse of more than 70%. The introduction of narrow-slit images (NBI) and photodynamic control allowed solving the issues of early diagnosis and radical surgical intervention, reducing relapses to 8%.
