On the third Saturday of September, surgeons around the world celebrate their professional holiday.

Every day they save thousands of lives. These specialists work in the most complex and responsible field of medicine. Surgical treatments are often the only way to save a patient’s life. Today, surgeons have endoscopes, laser, radio wave equipment, surgical microscopes and other devices at their disposal that allow them to perform precise operations, reduce the time of surgical intervention, but all this complex process is managed by these medical specialists.

From the first days of education in Kursk State Medical University, surgeons are trained by real luminaries in the field of surgery.

For example, the first Head of the Department of General Surgery, Professor Ya.M. Bune, is a Doctor of Medical Sciences, graduate of the Military Medical Academy of St. Petersburg, author of 12 scientific papers. He operated in evacuation hospitals during the Great Patriotic War and was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

Professor G.E. Ostroverkhov was the head of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy in the 50s of the past century. Georgy Yefimovich had a great professional experience: he worked as a military surgeon, head of the surgical department and chief physician of the hospital. During the Great Patriotic War G.E. Ostroverkhov was a chief surgeon of hospitals of the North Caucasus military district, after the war he became a doctoral student at the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Sergey Vasilyevich Turikov was the assistant of the same department in the 50’s, lieutenant colonel of medical service, participant of the Great Patriotic War, the order bearer. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner, Order of the Red Star, Order of the Patriotic War of the II degree, Order of the Patriotic War of the I degree. And it is important to mention G.E. Ostroverkhov’s pupil, Albert Dmitrievich Myasnikov, who created Kursk Surgical Scientific School.

Rector of KSMU Professor Viktor Anatolyevich Lazarenko is also a surgeon. Besides, today he not only heads the Department of Surgical Diseases of Institute of Continuing Education, but also continues to carry out the most difficult operations, total amount of which has already hitted five thousand. Viktor Anatolyevich is the graduate of Kursk medical university and passed a way from the nurse of resuscitation office of the Kursk Regional Clinical Hospital to surgeon, cardiovascular surgeon of the highest qualification category, head of department of the university and hospital who has defended the Candidate’s dissertation, and then the doctoral dissertation under the guidance of one of the leading surgeons of our area – professor Vladimir Grigoryevich Gladkikh. V.A. Lazarenko is the Member of the Council of Rectors of Medical and Pharmaceutical Universities of Russia, Chairman of the Kursk Regional Public Organization “Scientific and Practical Society of Surgeons”. Viktor Anatolyevich is the author of three scientific discoveries, more than 90 publications, 26 monographs, 95 inventions. 7 doctoral and 23 candidate’s theses were defended under his leadership. And in 2022, Viktor Lazarenko was awarded the title of “Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation” by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation.

Thanks to such teachers, Kursk Medical University has brought up a whole pleiad of high-quality surgical specialists who work today not only in medical institutions of the Kursk region, but in all regions of our country.
