Maslenitsa came to KSMU with pancakes and rosy pies, with honey gingerbread and cheerful songs. The songs were performed by the ensemble “Sedmitsa,” Ekaterina Razinkova, and Ignaty Lomakin – a celebration that has been preserved in Russia since pagan times. The ancient Slavs considered the pancake a symbol of the Sun, as it is yellow, round, and hot, just like the Sun, and believed that by eating pancakes, they were consuming a piece of its warmth and power.

The hosts talked about each day of Maslenitsa, the customs and traditions, played “Stream,” competed in kettlebell lifting and tug-of-war, and participated in other interesting traditional Maslenitsa games, danced in circles, and of course, ate pancakes!

It was especially interesting for the international students, as many of them experienced the traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa for the first time!
