On May 23, 2022, a memorial board to Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, Professor Leonid Georgievich Prokopenko was installed and solemnly opened at the Department of Biological Chemistry of Kursk State Medical University as a sign of memory and gratitude from students and staff of the department. On this day Leonid Georgievich would have turned 90 years old.
Leonid Georgievich Prokopenko devoted his whole life to science. In 1957 he graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Kursk Medical Institute. He remained a postgraduate student at the Department of Biochemistry, defended his PhD thesis in the 61st, and 6 years later defended his doctoral dissertation. Relative to the opening of the Faculty of Pharmacy at KSMU in 1966, L.G. Prokopenko was elected the first Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. L. G. Prokopenko was the organizer of the pharmaceutical faculty and the first head of the Department of Organic Chemistry.
From 1970 to 1973 he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. For more than 40 years, from 1970 to 2011, Professor L.G. Prokopenko was the head of the Department of Biological Chemistry of KSMU. And from 2011 until the last days of his life he worked at the department as a professor.
L.G. Prokopenko is the author of more than five hundred scientific works, including two scientific discoveries. Under his leadership, 19 doctors and 45 candidates of medical and biological sciences were trained.
L.G. Prokopenko was awarded the medal of the Order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the II degree, the badge “Excellent Health Worker”, the commemorative badge “For Works and the Fatherland”, the medal “The Best People of Russia”, the commemorative medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences “To the Author of a scientific discovery”, included in the encyclopedia “The best people of Russia””.
The opening of the memorial bpard was attended by Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Viktor Anatolyevich Lazarenko, members of the Rector’s office, staff of the Department, students. Viktor Anatolyevich Lazarenko gratefully remembers L.G. Prokopenko as his mentor.
Leonid Georgievich left a bright mark in the history of the university. Many flowers were laid at the memorial board.
